Voyant Photonics has raised $15.4 million in its Series A funding round. The round was led by UP.Partners and also saw participation of previous investors LDV Capital and Contour Ventures.

Founded in 2018 by Chris Phare and Steven Miller, Voyant Photonics is creating a new category of LiDAR sensors for machine perception.

The company creates sophisticated optical systems optimized for FMCW LiDAR using low-cost semiconductor chips.

The U.S.-based company uses scalable and commercially available semiconductor fabrication processes to combine thousands of optical and electrical components onto a single chip.

With this process, the company mass-produces a LiDAR system similar to the computer chips manufacturing process.

This cutting-edge technology of Voyant will make Voyant LiDAR an omnipresent technology for machine perception.

Currently, the company is in plans to make about 200 units for its partners in the next year, and in 2023 they will start taking commercial orders.

Voyant plans to use the fresh funding to move towards production by placing its development kits in the hands of partners.

China ?? December Manufacturing Activity Continues to Grow ⬆️, Beats Expectations

China’s factory activity surprisingly grew again in the month of December, according to official data published on December 30.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that the official manufacturing PMI increased marginally to 50.3 in December, up from 50.1 in November.

The PMI, which is an important metric used to measure the manufacturing activity in China, showed a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points from last month’s reading, beating the expectations of analysts who had largely anticipated a slight decline.

China’s PMI data plunged below 50 point mark for two months in September and October, mainly due to the power crisis.

However, the factory activity started rising again in November after seven months of downfall due to high raw material prices and power shortages.

On the other hand, the services sector rose slightly at a quicker pace in December, increasing to 52.7 from November’s 52.3, an increase of 0.4 percentage points from the previous month.

Overall, the official composite PMI (includes manufacturing and services activity) stood at 52.2 and remained unaltered from November.

Tesla Recalls Over 475,000 Cars ? to Fix Safety Defects

Electric Vehicle-maker Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 cars to address potential issues in its rearview camera and trunk latching systems that increase the risk of accidents.

The company is recalling about 356,309 of its 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles to address rearview camera issues and about 119,009 of its Model S vehicles due to front hood problems, according to data submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In the case of Model 3 units, the opening and closing of the trunk may damage the cable harness attaching the rearview camera, leading the camera to suddenly fail.

Meanwhile, in the Model S, the front hood latch issues may cause the trunk to open without any warning and may block the driver’s visibility, increasing the potential risk of an accident.

The company estimates that only 1% of Tesla Model 3 vehicles may display the defect, as compared to 14% of its recalled Model S vehicles.

Since both the issues increase the chances of a crash, the company will examine them in the recalled units and make any necessary repairs at no additional costs to owners.
